Week 12 - Picking and Choosing

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."
II Timothy 3:16-17

Every now and then, I enjoy a good ol' Chinese buffet... mostly because I love the sugar-y, fried dough balls! They are a guilty pleasure that I fill up on every time we go. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! (If you haven't been able to tell... I am a girl who likes her food! haha) Apart from the fried yummy goodness though, I enjoy having many options to choose from. You never have to get the same thing when you go back for seconds. Being able to pick and choose is fun!

When it comes to our Bible though, there is no picking and choosing. You can not believe in Heaven and choose to NOT believe in Hell. You can not believe in the death of Christ and choose NOT believe in His resurrection. You can not believe that God made the Heaven and the Earth and choose to believe in evolution.

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God." If you do not believe in the Bible in it's entirety, then you are allowing the Devil to cast doubt upon everything the Bible says. Every author of the Bible was inspired by God himself. When you disregard something the Bible says, you are not discounting what a person said, you are discounting the very word of God.

God's word "instructs us in that which is true, reproves us for that which is amiss, and directs us in that which is good." (Matthew Henry Commentary). It is so powerful that it is able to take a sin-cursed man and  make him suitable for good works.

I am thankful that God made it very clear we are not to believe part of the Bible, but ALL of it. Our human nature makes us feel that we have a right to pick and choose what we believe, but that is just a lie the devil has been telling us for thousands of years.
